My rental of the week is a Kia Optima. Don’t have a lot to say about it so I’m unsure if it’ll get a full write up. Best thing about it is the color (metalic blue), worst thing about it is the engine seems to be in an abusive relationship with the transmission.
ANYWAY....
We all know the car “hack” where the gas gauge shows you which side of the car the fill cap is on with a little arrow. Only... this car has two little arrows and they disagree. The one on the gauge points to the driver’s side, the one on the distance to empty ( DTE) indicator (which is always present) points to the passenger.... sort of.
So which is it?
The pretty obvious assumption is to go by the gas gauge as it is the canonical source, and you would be right, but it is pretty silly the DTE indicator provides unnecessary confusion.
Bonus points the gas station I went to had one of those video ad things in the pump and it was horrible. The ads were about 5 seconds each and played in rapid fire. Made me feel like I had ADD or something. I couldn’t find any secret mute button or anything so I just ended up feeling like I should smash it with a hammer.

The DTE arrow is pointing at the pump. As in “ go to the pump in 32 miles.”

As a software developer... don't trust the software one. :P

Excessive ads that detract from the customer experience are a major dissatisfier. Like, lose-my-business-really-fast levels of irritation.

That's what I'm thinking. Though it does sort of give the impression that Kia thinks its customers are simpletons that need pictures and a giant arrow to tell them they need gas.

No, they’re both pointing at the driver side; one is to and one is from. Missed detail in UI design.

That’s unforgivable.

Wow yours has the dual tanks option. Nice!

The arrow on the DTE would make sense if it was pointing toward a depiction of the back of the car. Like its pointing to which side of the car then fuel filler is on.

Using pictures instead of words saves on localization costs when the same product is sold in multiple markets with differing local languages. See also: European road signs, IKEA assembly instructions, and

I subscribe to YT music, which also removes ads from music videos on regular YT (we don’t have YTRed in Canada). I’ve noticed that YouTube has removed the yellow indicator in the time bar that shows there an ad is placed. Somehow, surprise ads are even more annoying than the indicated ones. Plus, you can’t tell if a video is riddled with ads. BOO!

I always go by whichever one is on the gauge,
itself!

The 0-100 rage of going from “this music is great” to “I did not sign up for this” is a viscerally memorable feeling. I can’t think of any time I’ve been so immediately perturbed by a single event.

I can relate.

I'm aware of the real reason. I'm making a comment on the (lack of) critical thinking skills displayed by many drivers.

My local Shell got new pumps and started doing the annoying ad thing. On it, it’s the second down from the top right of the screen that mutes it. But yeah on unknown pumps I just try them all and hope one works. I certainly wouldn’t go back to a station that subjects you to that crap and doesn’t at least let you mute it.

I wonder
if a selective application of voltage to the right spot might serve as a permanent mute for those
but it’s probably inadvisable
to be
making sparks while pumping gas...

Reposting this from last year . The gas station finally replaced their pumps (this time without video screens, hallelujah) a month ago.
